Five people looked at it and you got five answers. Here is the rule we use: a sound slab with cracks under half an inch, spalls, chipped step edges, or a lifted joint is a repair. A sound slab with damage all over the surface is a resurface. A slab that has heaved, sunk, or cracked through in more than a couple of places is a replacement, and a repair on it is money on top of a problem. You get that answer in writing with the price for each option.

A repair fails when the wrong material meets the wrong crack. Structural cracks that need to be locked get epoxy injection. Spalls get cut back to sound concrete and rebuilt with polymer mortar, then textured to match the surrounding finish, because a smooth gray smear next to a broom finish is the "looks worse than the crack" repair everyone has seen.

How do I know if it is too far gone?
We check three things at the estimate: whether the slab is moving (heave, settling, a joint that lifts), how deep the damage goes, and how much of the surface it covers. A stable slab with local damage is a repair. Surface damage everywhere on a stable slab is a resurface. A moving slab is a replacement, and we say so instead of patching it twice. For sunken sections, lifting is an option when the ground under it has finished settling; if it has not, the slab sinks again in a couple of years, and we tell you that too.

Every concrete slab in Charlotte sits on red clay that moves with the seasons, and forty or so freezing nights a year work water into any open crack and pop it wider. That is why a crack fill has to flex. A rigid patch in a crack that opens every August and closes every February breaks the first year and takes some of the edge with it. Routed and filled with a flexible sealant, the same crack stays closed and dry for years. Spalling is different: once the top layer lets go, the loose material has to come off down to sound concrete, or anything put on top comes off with it.

Why is the minimum so high for a small job?
A crew, a truck, and materials cost the same to send for one crack as for ten, which is why unit prices go up as jobs get smaller. Our minimum covers that honestly and it is the same number for every small job. What we do not do is quote a go-away price for a job we would rather not take.
Can spalling be patched, or will it flake off again?
A thin patch over spalling flakes off again, usually the next winter. The loose layer has to be cut back to sound concrete and rebuilt with a bonding repair mortar, then textured to match. If the spalling covers most of the slab, resurfacing is the better answer, and we say which at the estimate.
Is lifting a sunken slab worth it, or will it sink again?
It depends on whether the ground under it has finished settling. If it has, a lift lasts for years. If water is still washing out the base or the clay is still moving, the slab sinks again in a couple of years. Will the repair look worse than the crack?
A gray smear over a hairline crack does. A routed crack filled flush with a color-matched sealant, or a spall rebuilt and broom-textured to match the slab, does not. Repairs are always visible up close; the goal is that nobody notices from the driveway.
