The sealer turned white the first summer
Sealed too early, or on a humid day, or with the wrong product, and by July there were milky patches and a corner flaking off. Sealer traps moisture if the slab has not cured, and cheap sealer burns off in Charlotte sun. Color in stamped concrete is built in three layers: the integral color or color hardener in the slab, the darker release that settles into the texture, and the sealer that deepens everything. A dry sample lies about the last two. Will the sealer turn white, peel, or fade?
Milky sealer comes from sealing before the concrete has cured, sealing on a humid day, or sealing over moisture coming up through a slab with no base under it. Fading comes from sun on a sealer that was never rated for it. We seal after cure on a dry day with a UV-resistant exterior sealer, over a compacted base that drains, and you get a written care sheet with the 2 to 3 year reseal schedule.
Properly sealed stamped concrete in Charlotte holds its color and texture for 15 to 25 years. The reseal schedule and care instructions come with your proposal, not after the fact.
Is it going to be slippery when wet?
Stamped concrete is only slick when it is over-sealed with a gloss sealer and no additive. Pool decks, walkways, and steps get an anti-slip additive in every coat, and we can use a satin sealer instead of gloss where you want less shine. The texture of the pattern itself gives more grip than a broom finish once it is sealed correctly.

Pavers or stamped: you are getting conflicting information because both camps are half right. Pavers can be lifted one at a time if one cracks, and they drain between the joints; they also grow weeds and shift in Charlotte's red clay unless the base under them is perfect. Stamped concrete is one solid, easy-to-clean surface with no joints for weeds, at 30 to 50 percent of the cost of stone or pavers; it also cannot be patched invisibly, so the base, the thickness, and the joint layout have to be right the first time. That is where the work is.
Charlotte adds three things to the list. Red clay moves with the seasons, so we pour every stamped slab on compacted crushed stone and cut control joints on schedule, hidden in the pattern lines where we can. Forty or so freezing nights a year push water into any unsealed surface, which is why sealing on time matters more here than in a dry climate. And leaf litter from oaks and pines stains an unsealed slab by November, so the first seal goes on as soon as the slab has cured.

Will the color look like the sample?
It will look like the sealed sample, which is why we show you both. A dry sample or a binder swatch reads brighter and flatter than the finished slab because the release and the sealer are missing. We name the pattern, base color, and release color on your proposal and you approve them before the pour.
Why does new stamped concrete look chalky, too bright, or white?
Because the release powder is still on it. Stamped concrete is poured, dusted with release, stamped, then washed a couple of days later and sealed after it cures. Until the wash and seal, it looks nothing like the finished surface. If your feet come away white, the wash has not happened yet.
Why does sealer turn white, and will yours?
Sealer turns milky when it traps moisture: sealing before the slab has cured, sealing on a humid day, or sealing over a slab with no base that wicks ground water.
