The honest rule: an overlay is only as good as the slab under it. Is concrete resurfacing worth it, or should I just replace the driveway?
It depends entirely on the slab. Flat, solid, dry, with surface damage only: resurface, at a third to half the cost. Heaved, settled, cracked through, or coming apart in layers: replace, because an overlay on a moving slab fails where the old one did. We check for hollow spots, heave, and moisture at the estimate and put the answer in writing with both prices.
Will the old cracks come back through the overlay?
Hairline surface cracks on a stable slab do not. Working cracks, the ones that open and close with the seasons, will telegraph through any overlay unless they are routed and filled with a flexible repair first, and if the slab is still moving they come back anyway. That is the difference between a slab that qualifies and one that does not.
How long does a concrete overlay actually last?
On a sound, dry slab with real prep, 8 to 15 years with sealing every 2 to 3 years. On a moving or damp slab, two summers. The lifespan is decided at the assessment, not by the product.
Why do overlays peel or get dark marks?
